Hallucinations and Human-in-the-Loop

It sounds like the title of a Dr. Seuss book. Something with a rhyming couplet and a creature with too many hats.

It's not.

These are two of the most important AI concepts nonprofit leaders need to understand right now. One describes a real risk, and the other describes the solution.

What is a hallucination?

When AI makes something up and presents it as fact. A statistic that doesn't exist. A grant that was never funded. A quote from someone who never said it. AI doesn't know when it's wrong. It just keeps going, confidently. This is called a hallucination and it happens more than most people realize.

For nonprofits the stakes are real. A fabricated statistic in a grant narrative. An incorrect fact in a donor email. A made-up quote in a board report. Any of these can damage your credibility with the people whose trust you depend on most.

What does human-in-the-loop mean?

It means a real person reviews AI-generated content before it goes anywhere. Every fact checked. Every name verified. Every statistic sourced back to a real document.

You are the editor. AI is the first draft. That's the only way to use these tools responsibly — and in the nonprofit world, where your reputation is everything, it is non-negotiable.

The bottom line:

AI is a powerful tool. But it needs you to keep it honest. Check everything before it goes out. Every time. No exceptions.
