Tell Stories That Honor Dignity: Ethical AI Prompts for Nonprofit Storytelling

How to share impact without exploiting your community

As nonprofit leaders, we know the power of storytelling. Funders want to see impact. Donors want to connect emotionally. But there's a right way and a wrong way to share stories about the people we serve.

When we use AI to help craft our narratives, we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to center dignity, agency, and systemic context. This guide will show you how.

The Right Way to Prompt AI

NEVER say: "Write a story about a homeless client"

INSTEAD, say:

Help me structure a story about our housing program's impact. I want to focus on: the barrier we helped remove, the strength the participant showed, and the outcome they achieved. Keep the person's dignity central. Avoid 'savior' language.

See the difference? The second prompt centers the person's strength and the systemic barrier—not their personal struggles or deficits.

Your Dignity-Centered Story Prompt (Copy & Paste)

I need to share our program impact. Help me write about [PROGRAM] by focusing on: - The systemic barrier (not personal deficit) - What our community member was working toward - How our program removed an obstacle - The person's own agency in their success Avoid pity, charity language, or before/after framing.

How to use it:

  1. Replace [PROGRAM] with your specific program name

  2. Add 2-3 sentences of context about what your program does

  3. Review the AI output carefully

  4. Rewrite in your own voice

  5. Most importantly: Get consent before sharing (see checklist below)

The Permission Checklist

Before using ANY AI-generated story about a real person, ask yourself:

  • Do you have explicit consent to share this story?

  • Did the person approve the final version?

  • Are identifying details removed/changed?

  • Is their strength centered, not their struggle?

  • Would they feel proud reading this?

If you can't check every box, don't publish the story. Period.

Better Questions to Ask AI

Instead of focusing on individual stories, try these prompts that protect privacy while still showing impact:

Prompt 1: System-Level Barriers

Describe the common barriers our community faces when trying to access [housing/food security/education/healthcare]. Focus on systemic issues, not individual circumstances.

Prompt 2: Program Model Explanation

Explain our program model without naming individuals. Describe how we work, what makes our approach effective, and what outcomes we typically see.

Prompt 3: Aggregate Impact

Write about our aggregate outcomes: [INSERT YOUR DATA]. Explain what these numbers mean for our community and why this work matters. Make it compelling but grounded in facts.

Prompt 4: Community Learning

Based on our work this year, help me articulate what we learned from our community about [relevant topic]. Focus on insights and lessons, not individual stories.

Why This Matters

Your data tells a story. Individual people deserve privacy.

When we exploit people's struggles for fundraising, we:

  • Perpetuate harmful stereotypes

  • Strip people of their dignity

  • Reinforce power imbalances

  • Violate trust

When we tell ethical stories, we:

  • Center systemic issues that need changing

  • Honor people's agency and strength

  • Build trust with our community

  • Model the values we claim to hold

Remember

AI is a tool to help you communicate—but you are the keeper of your community's stories. Use that power wisely.

Always ask: Does this story serve the mission, or does it serve the fundraising?

If it's only the latter, rethink your approach.
